Blue Ray movies vs HD DVDs

Just bought a Samsung 50-inch tv and have it hooked up to a Samsung blue-ray player. How much better will the pic be compared to regular DVDs? Noticeably better?

I also bought the Sonos 5.1 surround system. Will audio be better with a blue-ray disc as well?

I'm not tech savvy at all which is why I ask.

I have a blue ray player. I normally buy kids movies in the both pack so they can watch the dvd in the van and blue ray at home. Blue rays play dvd too.

Other than that I can not swear to the immense difference. I think it is prob like the diff between 780 Hd and 1080 hd. If you can tell the diff from across the room, good on you.

Regular dvd is not HD. It would be in 480 while a blue ray would be 1080P. It also has better digital audio tracks. A good blue ray player will do a decent job up converting the standard SD dvd to an HD signal, but it won't be as good as a blue ray disk.

If you can't tell the difference, it is either a low end player or tv.

Thanks. I hooked it up and the picture looks incredible. The audio (via Dolby Digital 5.1) is amazing too. Basically my basement is a movie theater now.
