Frederick Douglass

Harriet Tubman

Rosa Parks

Martin Luther King

Aretha Franklin

Barack Obama

Aretha and Obama off.

Thurgood Marshall and Muhammad Ali on.

I know you said non-sports, but I wouldn’t be putting him there for his sports achievements.
Maybe you have an Obama ear sticking out somewhere in the back. Or the back of his head.

Seriously, though. He won the national popularity contest. Twice.

Jesse Owens. Sports, yes. But there’s more to it than just that.

In the “yes, sports....but there is more to it than just that” category I would be good with any or all of Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, or Jackie Robinson. Oh second consideration, Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson are probably better choices.

George Washington Carver (my personal hero)
Fredrick Douglass
Thurgood Marshall
Sojourner Truth
Booker T. Washington
Jesse Owens

George Washington Carver was an amazing dude. I believe he was a founder of the Tuskegee institute.

Also if you are going to include Rosa Parks, you should probably exchange her for Claudette Colvin since she refused to give up her seat to a white man 9 full months prior to Ms. Parks.

Lastly, Henrietta Lacks is a greatly unsung lady in American history. Thanks to her cell line, that was taken without permission, there are many many people alive today that would otherwise have not been. She is truly 'immortal'.

My wife added Ruby Bridges to her list. She teaches her 3rd grade class about her every year.

She also went to the Rock and Roll HOF summer institute to integrate music into the classroom. She's also her school's teacher of the year.

Congratulations!!!

You married well...

No higher calling than that of a Teacher!!!

Oklahoma’s own Clara Luper is a too often unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement that rightfully earned a place on this MR if her contributions were just more widely known.
