The Big 12 basketball schedule was released Monday on both the men’s and women’s sides. Here are five takeaways from OU’s and OSU’s conference schedules:
Cowboys have a big Big Monday presence
Mike Boynton’s Oklahoma State squad got plenty of exposure last year on ESPN’s Big Monday, with three appearances.
That continues this season with three more, thanks in large part to Cade Cunningham’s addition to the Cowboys’ roster.
The Cowboys will host West Virginia on Jan. 4. Their other two Big Monday games will come on the road, at Iowa State on Jan. 25 and Kansas on Feb. 8.
This will give the Cowboys 50 appearances on Big Monday, which began in 1992.
OU will play on Big Monday once, Feb. 1 at Texas Tech.

Early start for Sooners

With each Big 12 team playing two games before Christmas break, it was known OU’s slate would start earlier than normal.
But the Sooners have the earliest conference game in the league, traveling to TCU on Sunday, Dec. 6. OU will play just three non-conference games before Big 12 play begins, then will play three more before returning to conference play Dec. 22 at home against Texas Tech.
The early start is meant to give teams an opening later in the schedule to make up games if necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The regular season is scheduled to end Feb. 27, with the Big 12 Tournament not beginning until March 10.

Oklahoma State’s two pre-Christmas games will be Dec. 16 at home against TCU and Dec. 20 at Texas.

Time to shine for Cowboys

The importance of big games figures to be magnified for Oklahoma State since there won’t be an NCAA Tournament to look forward to, barring a change.

The Cowboys are on a one-year ban from the tournament due to NCAA sanctions, though the school continues to pursue an appeal.

Games against Kansas always fit that bit and the Cowboys face Bill Self’s Jayhawks on Jan. 12 at home before the Big Monday game at Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 8.

OSU has eight wins over the Jayhawks since 2008, including a sweep of Kansas in 2018. The Cowboys have won four of the last seven games against Kansas in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Bedlam wrap-up

In each of the last three seasons, the Sooners and Cowboys have finished the regular season separated by two games or less in the conference standings.

If the teams are tight entering the final Saturday of games this year, they’ll settle it on the court.

The second Bedlam meeting of the season comes Feb. 27 in Norman. The teams’ first meeting will be played Jan. 16 in Stillwater.

Women’s Bedlam games nearly two months apart

The change in the structure of the Big 12 schedule for this season means the first women’s Bedlam matchup will come earlier than normal.

The Sooners and Cowgirls will face off Dec. 15 at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. For OSU, the game will open the Big 12 slate, while the Sooners will face Kansas on Dec. 10. In their first conference game.
The other meeting between the programs won’t happen until Feb. 6 in Stillwater.
The teams have split their season series each of the last two years. They were set to meet March 12 in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament before that event was canceled.
