Cleveland trades Mayfield to Carolina today.

Recapping the whole situation where Cleveland once again proves how not to compete for a Super Bowl.

Mayfield - #1 pick to Cleveland. During his tenure he proved beyond a shadow of doubt that selection was a mistake. IMO he never met performance expectations and I believe proved his OU performance was a product of OU's system along with skilled players surrounding him.

Next, Cleveland fully guarantees his $32.4 MM contract. Then the club makes another huge mistake by picking up the option for 2022 that was going to cost them close to $19MM . Now going forward, Cleveland decides we screwed the pooch and picks up Watson from Houston. Houston is smart, we don't want the Watson risk anymore. Cleveland then proceeds to give up first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024 along with a 2023 third-rounder and 2022 and 2024 fourth-round selections. Cleveland buys the Watson uncertainty and picks up a 2024 six round pick in the process Jeez Cleveland why don't you buy a seat on the NYSE. It seems to be less risky than Watson.

Now Cleveland does not need pissed off Mayfield and trades him to Carolina. In exchange for a conditional draft pick to Cleveland. The Browns literally have to pay Carolina to take him and will pay $10.5 million of Mayfield's 2022 guaranteed salary. Consolation price, Cleveland was able to lower the guaranteed salary to $15+ MM and Carolina only has to pay $4.85 MM

A side note, it is also important to note Mayfield was progressing in his 2021 performance until injuring his shoulder. It will be interesting to follow Mayfield in 2022 to see if leaving Cleveland proves to be the right decision for him and Carolina. IMO Cleveland will be Cleveland in 2022.
