Baby it's cold outside song

Well established take among my intellectual friends, think-piece types.

Related note: thoughts about NBC's revision of the "Unga-Wunga" native scene in Peter Pan? Used a Cherokee actress and a Chickasaw linguist to tame it. Is "tame" the proper word? Dunno. My indigenous ancestors couldn't wait to pass as white around 1900 (thanks a lot, dudes).

How do you know he does not want her to stay just so they can snuggle by the fire?

No means no:

(I really can't stay) But, baby, it's cold outside
(I've got to go away) But, baby, it's cold outside
(This evening has been) Been hoping that you'd drop in
(So very nice) I'll hold your hands they're just like ice

(My mother will start to worry) Beautiful, what's your hurry
(My father will be pacing the floor) Listen to the fireplace roar
(So really I'd better scurry) Beautiful, please don't hurry
(Well, maybe just half a drink more) Put some records on while I pour

(The neighbors might think) Baby, it's bad out there
(Say what's in this drink) No cabs to be had out there
(I wish I knew how) Your eyes are like starlight now
(To break this spell) I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell

(I ought to say no, no, no, sir) Mind if I move in closer
(At least I'm gonna say that I tried) What's the sense of hurting my pride
(I really can't stay) Baby, don't hold doubt
[Both][/I] Baby, it's cold outside

(I simply must go) Baby, it's cold outside
(The answer is no) Baby, it's cold outside
(The welcome has been) How lucky that you dropped in
(So nice and warm) Look out the window at the storm

(My sister will be suspicious) Gosh your lips look delicious
(My brother will be there at the door) Waves upon a tropical shore
(My maiden aunt's mind is vicious) Gosh your lips are delicious
(But maybe just a cigarette more) Never such a blizzard before

(I got to get home) But, baby, you'd freeze out there
(Say lend me a coat) It's up to your knees out there
(You've really been grand) I thrill when you touch my hand
(But don't you see) How can you do this thing to me

(There's bound to be talk tomorrow) Think of my life long sorrow
(At least there will be plenty implied) If you caught pneumonia and died
(I really can't stay) Get over that old doubt
[Both][/I] Baby, it's cold
[Both][/I] Baby, it's cold outside

If it's Zooey Deschanel singing, then by God yes it is.

Really nowhere in the song is there a definate no...... There is I ought to say no but not a definate no

Is it date rape if all they do is talk and share 1 kiss? Maybe date kidnapping would be a better term.

I always imagine it being sung by a guy that blocks the door, locks it, and makes his move.

Ups the creep factor.

JD - like Christopher Walken's "Continental" from SNL?

I always thought of it more of a 1940's girl trying to act the "good girl" while she wants to stay as much as he wants her to, but she needs him to provide the reason that gives her plausible deniability to defend herself from the mores of the era.

I thought similarly about that song "Home" they played during girls gymnastics the last Olympics. It sounded like a child predator talking to a kid he's luring to kidnap and rape...

Hold on to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave (wave) is stringing us along

Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble-it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo. Oo-oo-oo-oo [2x]
Aaa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa. Aa-aa-aa-aaaaaa [4x]

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

(Come on!)

Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo. Ao-oo-oo-oo [4x]
Aaa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa. Aa-aa-aa-aaaaaa [4x]

Placing the song in its historical context, I believe that this clearly the correct interpretation.
