I watched a good interview with AT&T's CEO yesterday that referenced AT&T hiring Cohen after the election. Said it was a terrible decision, but that it was done to try to get a better understanding of who Trump was and what positions he'd be supporting. It was a byproduct of Trump being such an outsider, that these companies were willing to do anything they could to try to get ahead of what his presidency might look like.
