America Steals Jobs From Foreign Workers

Is this a serious article?
Yes, of course. What makes you ask? The point being made is that DJT insists when American companies outsource jobs to foreign lands those foreign countries have “stolen American jobs.” And as President he sees it as his job to bring those jobs back to America where he thinks they belong. So is the reverse true? There are over 7 million Americans with jobs that by Trump’s logic were “stolen” from foreign workers. My question is: does Mr. Trump thinks they should be returned to the “rightful” foreign workers from whom they were “stolen?” What do you think?

No, of course not...he speaks of America first. Also, is the insourcing TO the US because of unfair trade practices or because it makes economical sense for these companies to set up shop in the US?

The vast majority of the jobs he’s chasing left due to unfair trade practices or in the case of China, currency manipulation.

Apples and dildos here...

Could you please explain to me the moral difference to an American worker who has lost his job because of “unfair trade practices” (and also please define what is an unfair trade practice and give an example or two) and a foreign worker who has lost his job because it made “economic sense” to give it to an American worker? In what sense has one job been “stolen” while the other has been legitimately bern transferred?

My company manufactures products all over the world. We have one line in particular where we make the identical product in the US as we do in a plant in Italy. We do this because the product is very large, and it wouldn’t make sense to import the raw materials to the US, make the product here, then ship to Europe.

Unfair trade...country A places a tariff on country B that exceeds what country B has on A. US auto industry was a decent example of that.

Manipulation of currency? Do you really need me to explain why China devalues their currency?

The DBros and I know where you're going with this, and how it will end; do we have time to get another beer?

Let me put your argumentnin terms that you will disagree with, but to be honest this is what you (the Trump economic team) are saying.

You are mainly agreeing with the tariffs that have been slapped on American consumers who desire to buy imported products. It is unfair to American workers for American consumers to buy imported products that are cheaper, thus leaving more money in those consumers’ pockets. American consumers should be required by the government to pay higher prices than necessary, and the reason it is OK for the government to do this is because a foreign government (China) has taxed its citizens and manipulated its currency so that American consumers can buy products they prefer at cheaper prices, thus causing foreign citizens (Chinese) to make up the difference, making those foreign citizens poorer at America’s benefit.

You see, currency manipulation and subsidizing companies and nationalizing industries come at the expense of the citizens of the governments that do those things, to the benefit of the consumers in countries that trade with them.

China has been stealing from its own people, not from us. I believe a worker that loses his job to someone else does not particularly care why, he feels it has been stolen. Trump’s team cannot with a straight face say foreign countries have stolen jobs from Americans and then defend over 7 million jobs that have been taken from foreign workers and imported to America. That is the point.

Don’t put words in my mouth. I’m against tariffs...and fully realize the short term implications of them, but your crazy utopian view is making you miss 50% of the equation. Countries slapping tariffs on our exports causes us to be less competitive and when production moves, American jobs are lost.

Is there a reason you are ok with other countries taxing their people for purchasing US goods?

Ah, now you’ve put words in my mouth! I’m not OK with any country charging tariffs. Tariffs are universally economically destructive. The point is they are predominately destructive to the country that applies them. It is insanity for Trump to punish American citizens/consumers as a solution to China punishing its own citizens/consumers. Tariffs provide no short term or long term cure for anyone.

Mark Perry, thr economist in the link, has frequent posts he calls “Backlash Economics” in which he shows the damage Trumps tariffs are causing to American companies and jobs. I don’t remember the exact numbers but in a recent analysis it was something like 700 companies being hurt by them to 45 being helped. Hell, even the steel companies are being hurt because steel buyers are going to alternative materials instead of paying the higher prices for steel.

If person A has to pay more for a specific product but if that higher price results in person B and also sperson C with a job there is a net economic gain for the country.

Trump has stated his goal is no tariffs but it is outright stupidity and malpractice not to protect your countries self interests when other countries are taxing the crap out of our products.

All you care about is getting something at the cheapest price. We'll that is not always in the best long term interest of the consumer. There's a bigger picture to consider.

You are not listening. Tariffs do not result in a net gain in jobs. Exactly the opposite, in fact. That’s the whole point economists from across the spectrum, from free market ideologies like Don Boudreaux to interventionists like Paul Krugman have been trying to tell us from day one. Tariffs are nothing more than rent-seeking by politically
powerful interests and vote gathering from economically corrupt politicians.

You are mistaken in accusing me of caring only about the cheapest price. What I care about is allowing free people to make free decisions over their lives, including deciding for themselves what they want to buy and from whom they want to buy. Tariffs are an authoritarian, big government interference. Free people should bitterly object to such interference. Some people want to buy locally and are willing to pay extra for their actions. Bully for them! Nothing should be in place to stop them. Others are concerned only with price. Their choices should not be interfered with by their government. That’s an improper application of government. America is supposed to be the land of the free. Governmental authoritarian mandates, things like tariffs and required health insurance, for example, are hinderances to the “utopian” life our Founding Fathers envisioned.
