I never really understand these kinds of posts, how can big, major artist albums, or albums by critical darlings like Lucinda be considered underrated? What qualifies as underrated?

Someone answered this question with an "underrated" album that won a Grammy for Album of the Year back in the day. Not every album not called Hotel California or Sgt Peppers or Rumours can be considered underrated.

Sorry, just nitpicking.

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True

I only say "underrated" as neither album sold all that well compared to their contemporaries.

Shut up hipster.

i didn't say obscure, I said underrated. If something won a Grammy, then yeah I'm with you. i guess I'm asking about albums you love that people don't automatically think of when they are asked about "great albums".

You mentioned Lucinda ... if you asked 20 people to name an album, they'd likely name car wheels.

Thanks for starting a fight in the middle of my black panther party. :(

I'd say over half of Elvis Costello's records over a 40 year career are underrated by the general public. 7-8 would comfortably make my top 100.

I'd name some underrated albums, but you squares wouldn't know the bands.

The great divide, break in the storm

Don Williams greatest hits. If you ever have a baby that won't go to sleep this one is your golden ticket.

Genesis - Duke

I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock… Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds… But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

Collins actually took over well as "leader" well before Duke, basically right after Peter Gabriel left (at least the next record after), it's just that they didn't get nearly as much exposure in the U.S. until And Then There Were Three, which was actually the album immediately preceding Duke.

I like Duke also. I never was much of a Genesis fan, but I had a very close friend growing up that was/is a fanatic. You're right that they were very artsy in the time prior to Gabriel leaving, but you also have to remember that sort of thing was quite common during that period (Late 60's to Mid 70's).

Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were performing together since they were teenagers like 1966 or 1967, up until what 2007? Collins joined along about 1970.

And incidentally, Peter Gabriel's sort of famous song Solsbury Hill is about the day he made the decision to leave Genesis.

Also Huey Lewis and the News - Sports

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

You obviously haven't listened to too much Elvis Costello.

This must be some sort of parody.... us hipsters don't do parody.

Fine, since you guys have no taste in movies and you ruined my joke I'll play your game.

Band of Horses - Everything all the time

The National - Boxer

You've actually posted two people and albums that I love. John Conlee and Don Williams. Don Williams has about the most soothing voice I've ever heard.

Kind off topic, but I had a friend back in DC, an older guy who had spent about 10 yrs in the Air Force, mainly in England. I went to his house one and saw some photos he had on his mantle and there was a pic of him in fatigues, standing in front of a band.... I looked a little closer and saw the name on the bass drum said Genesis. He told me that they used to play the Air Force Base all the time, before they got famous and he got to know them fairly well and he kept that pic up to remind of the good times back in England.

I love his version of Amanda. My dad used to say Jim Reeves sang with such ease it was like he opened his mouth and his voice fell out. Don Williams has that kind of voice.
