A taste for what to expect over the election cycle

There was a time not long ago, that people on the left acted like normal human beings -- sane, all the while having completely opposite ideologies than the right. Now they have gone so far off the rails, into utter insanity, that I wonder if it even fair to refer to them as "the left" any longer? The ones who remain, the sane ones that you can actually talk to, must be completely disgusted. I'm dead-serious.

I am completely disgusted which is why I voted for Trump. The "progressives" are literally a spoof movie depicting the comedic fusion of SJW socialists with the Westboro Church.

They're Commies.

It is amazing that the most important constituent in the Democratic Party can not vote, that is the illegal immigrant. Their next debate should be in Central America.

The unions must be pulling there hair out.
Agreed. Bernie gave the working class some lip service but none of his proposals have any real meat in them. Hickenlooper (or whatever) from Colorado was pragmatic which is good, but he didn't speak much to the working class. Yang talked about those that are being automated out of jobs and why his UI program is important, but then highlighted that it would require a VAT tax to implement. And Kamala highlighted the plight of some people working multiple jobs to stay afloat. But noone is running on this topic. Every single candidate pivoted back to their base: Open Immigration, Universal Healthcare, and climate change. I have a hard time thinking that any of these candidates is going to beat Trump as long as the Dem message is that the poor of El Salvador are higher priority than the poor of Ohio.

Seems hard to believe, but every one of those candidates is paying millions to research groups that are telling them over and over that their base does believe this.

This.
That no voices of reason are coming forward cautioning them that they're approaching the tipping point into the abyss.
That scares the crap out of me.

Did you watch the post debate coverage? This is exactly the message that Joy Behar (or whatever her name is) was espousing. Her quote: "This is an election about driving the base". And for whatever reason, the Democratic base's key policies are open immigration, Free healthcare (arguably simply a benefit to immigrants), Climate change, and reproductive rights. These are followed by free tuition (and school loan repayment) and civil rights expansion. Jobs and the economy come in somewhere between 8th and 10th in their priority list.

There are a few voices. Michael Moore has been stating it for 4 years now. You heard it from a couple of the minor candidates in the debate. I don't recall which person said it last night, but one of the candidates said that nominating a socialist will guarantee us 4 more years of Trump (he's right). But that message doesn't resonate with the base and thus none of those individuals get any traction.

I think the true left has always been what it is - capitalist hating socialists who would shit on the Constitution the first chance they get.

Liberals however.... different thing. I thought I was liberal when I voted for Bill Clinton. But if you look at his 90's policies and JFK's policies, they line up more with Trump (a New York liberal) than any of the leftists on those stages this week. Guys like @Been Jammin are liberals - not leftists. Whether they realize it or not is the question.

For proof of this shift - check out Trump on The View in 2011. They didn't hate him. He wasn't literally Hitler. He was introduced as "My friend Donald Trump."

They disagreed with him on the birther thing but he got a warm reception by people who now act as if he is evil incarnate and always was.

Surely you guys realize that the "leftists", that you detest so much, are only a small portion of the "liberals"/Democrats that are living in this country. The thing is, that small portion is the loudest on social media, and they are made even "louder" by all of you who hate the left. You guys go out and find posts from people that are overly passionate about their politics, and share them with each other, which makes it seem like there are even more of those peeps around. (*see anecdote about my brother below)

I realize that it goes the opposite way also. There are ridiculous idiots on the far right, who post ridiculous stupid shit. You guys see it, and laugh it off, but it doesn't stick in your craw like the ridiculous lefty shit you see, so it doesn't seem to be as over the top and as prevalent. (and that's not even taking into account the cultish far right like the KKK, Proud Boys, etc.

*My brother is 49 years old and lives in Austin. He and his wife do not have kids. They are extremely liberal. (In my opinion), because they have no kids, and because they are in an extremely liberal environment, they are very passionate about their politics, and it is a problem. My mom and sister are both GOP, and there is a rift between my brother and both of them, with me in the middle. I try to explain to him that it is stupid to let politics negatively affect relationships with family, but he can't seem to get his head out of that overly leftist mindset. He's a smart guy, but he exists in an echo chamber. Everyone he socializes with, and everyone he communicates with (regularly) on line, feeds into his political views.

Been, the leftists aren't a minority in the Democratic party. Multiple polls have shown how accepting Democratic voters have become of socialism. Comparing the "progressives" aka socialists with fringes like the Proud Boys and KKK is truly just you burying your head in the sand.

To be fair, 2011 Trump was not the same guy as 2019 Trump. People change. Most of us probably change our world view over an 8 year period. Add in going from celebrity billionaire reality TV star to politician and POTUS, and the changes are even more significant.

Those same women probably look at him a lot differently today than they did 8 years ago, and it is not as simple as you make it out to be. It is multi-factorial, much of which he has brought on himself with his antics in recent years.

I don't think you got what I was saying. I was pointing out that the KKK like groups exist and that they are even further to the right than the people I was talking about. I wasn't comparing them to anyone on the left, as there are people even further to the left than those that I was discussing.

As far as who you want to classify as "leftists", "liberals", "socialists", etc., that is all subjective and not quantifiable IMO. You can make any kind of argument you want to make and that will get us nowhere.

It's pretty easy to spot the "progressives" aka socialists by their openly advocating socialist policies and openly identifying as socialists. I think you're in denial.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

He is the same guy. The media has harped on/ignored certain things to manipulate the caricature.

Trump isn't the same guy? You've sold yourself to the left's narrative, Been.

He was an orphan that decided he wanted to do politics like the grownups and fell in with the wrong crowd. Now he suspends reason just as easily as they do.

Yawn it away, there’s no hope for you. Reread what you just tried to sell us. What if we all become Nazis in seven years? Oh noes!

Hyperbole much? I never said anything about Trump being a Nazi. You came up with that narrative ITT.

p.s. I didn't even read any of this thread before I was tagged in it by @MegaPoke . Don't assume that I read anything prior to that because I did not. Maybe that is where our disconnect is, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, you are putting words in my mouth or not understanding what I said.

Fair enough. What is your opinion of how trump was beloved in pop culture and went to being the most hated man in the country?

He was in movies, tv shows, awards from Jesse jackson, mentioned in rap songs, he was probably one of the most recognized and marketable people on the planet.

And then, he took up the cause of conservatism. You take it from there.

A thought exercise for you...

Republicans have been for border security and deportations as long as I can remember. Democrats were for border security and deportations until recently. Which one of those has changed substantially?

That is completely tangential to this discussion. My brain is full right now.

The weird thing is I do realize that. And yet, for two straight nights, two stages full of people fought tooth and nail to move further left than each other. The most famous and arguably influential member of the D dominated house is AOC.

Why don't the silent majority of old school liberals do something about this? Leftists may comprise a minority of the party, but if you can't see they are driving the bus I'm not sure anything can be done.

Exactly, they are not a small portion of the congressmen and women and it was shown by how those people vote.

STRONGLY disagree. He's been saying the same stuff since the 80's. Look up some old Larry King videos interviews. He's been planning this his entire life. I know that doesn't fit the crazy narratives, but it's all on the internet if you want to look it up.
