A Question For My Democratic Party Friends

I think Sanders would have beat Trump in 2016. He should have been the nominee over Clinton. And yes, I think he could beat Trump in 2020.

I agree with you too about Biden in 2016. I think he also would have beaten Trump. I do wonder though what the outcome would have been among Democrats had Biden, Clinton, and Sanders all been candidates in 2016. Would Biden and Clinton have divided their support and allowed Sanders to claim the nomination?
Is there any other real reason he didn’t run except for the fact he would have split votes w Hilary??

This is where I disagree. Pelosi to me doesn't play in the 'purple' states that matter. Her election would allow Republicans to run ads non-stop that a vote for a Dem is a vote for Pelosi's (aka far-left) Democratic party.

Obama got elected with Pelosi as Speaker in 2008. I don't see Pelosi hurting a Dems chance in 2020 because the focus in 2020 with be on Trump and whoever is the Dem nominee.

And Reps are going to run ads on any Democrat claiming they are far-left, socialist, etc. That is part of their playbook and doesn't surprise anyone.

Yes. Sanders had the 35% that were ready for something different (even though he's been a politician his entire life and isn't really different). Although, given the way Superdelegates worked in the DNC in 2016 (you changed the rules for 2020), he still may not have earned the nom.

Dems in 2008 were still normal. They had different opinions, but everyone was mostly reasonable. 2008 was long before Open-borders, total gun control, free everything, white guilt, etc, that has consumed the Dem party in 2016.

I like Harris so far, I think she would be a better AG than a president based off of her experience and how much she hates interviews and public speaking.

I think she would make a great AG too but I don't think that is what she has her eye on. I honestly think she is positioning herself for the VP nomination. But I could see her catching fire in the Dem primary and winning the big prize if things break the right way for her.

If she gets neither, I think she would take the AG position if offered though.

Dems are still normal today lol.

Again, I just don't see Pelosi having any major effect on 2020. Will she be a target in 2019 by Reps? Sure, but so will be anyone who is the Dem Speaker. Once we hit the 2020 primaries though, the focus will be on the presidential candidates and not Pelosi.

I just think it is time for the Dems to choose a new House leader. Start afresh if they win the House.

I think the Dems and the country need her as speaker for the next two years. She gets shit done and in 2020 should could step down or retire and allow a new speaker with a new president.

This is a valid point. Pelosi is an effective leader.

Not sure I do.....seemed like you were asserting Dems play identity politics and Republicans don’t.

If I misinterpreted, Mea culpa.
My point was that I believe that the primary voters in the Democrat party are so caught up with what demographic the nominee belongs to more than the actual message. Given equal ability, the Democrat primary voters will chose the person who is a minority of some type.

Whereas, I believe the majority of Republican primary voters are generally blind to the inherent traits of the candidates and will vote for that person based on other policy or ideology.

Basically biased reversed.

Oh lord please trot out old creepy uncle Joe as the Dem nominee in 2020. The memes would write themselves.

And yet Republican primary voters and the party has never nominated anything but old white men.

I would say basically an inherent bias you’re not willing to acknowledge exists.

All I can go for myself is my voting and I went: Alan Keys, Newt, Ben Carson.

There could be a bias but they could have also been the best candidates.

And I've always said that Gene Kirkpatrick would have made one of our greatest ptesidents.

I wasn’t alleging that YOU personally have an inherent bias.

I was suggesting that the GOP might.

And it was “Jeane”....unless you were thinking of some old white guy with a similar name. (I keed, I keed)

So I'm a horrible speller. Here's the worst part... I thought I was misspelling her last name.

I don't really look at this as a white/minority issue. I'm just looking at the candidates and what they each could possibly bring to the table.

I do think you are greatly underestimating Harris though. Her popularity in the Democratic Party has been growing. She has been building a base of party support this election cycle. She also is very articulate, has an inspiring story, and is tough. She could easily run a unifying campaign that could defeat Trump. Republicans underestimate her at their own peril.

btw, I also think she could be the VP nominee on a ticket with either Biden or Sanders or someone else. Adding her would only enhance such a ticket in my opinion.
There’s your winning ticket.

Your belief is wrong. Again, right now, two older white men lead among Democrats in early polls for 2020. If they run, they will be the early front-runners. Could a minority or a woman win the nomination? Sure. But it will be because of their message and organization, not because of their demographic.

btw, I would agree with you about demographic when it comes to selecting a running mate. Many different factors usually play into choosing a running mate, for both parties.
