Just a few thoughts and opinions...Would love for others to correct me where you think I am off...
PG
As of now, Weathers is going to be the man here. I haven't seen him in action, but some seem to think that he is a capable PG, but better suited to play SG. Sounds like Cunningham is a SG who can handle the point. As we saw last season, Lindy is out of place when forced to play the point. I have heard no suggestion that CuJo can handle the position. Bottom line: If Weathers or Cunningham misses games for any reason, we will be in big trouble at this position. I think MB clearly needs to add another PG. A true freshman makes a lot of sense since we only have Cunningham for 1 season. Otherwise, he will be looking for 2 next season and will already be in a bit of a roster crunch.
SG
It sounds like Cunningham will be the likely starter, with Lindy backing him up and Dz in reserve. After the winter break, CuJo will probably move in front of Dz here. If he lives up to his recruiting hype, he might even allow Lindy to play more SF (or CuJo will play SF). Bottom Line: Adding another pure 2G wouldn't hurt, but I think we have significantly more need at other positions.
SF
This is a thin position (maybe). Lindy can play here, but might be better suited for 2G. The same goes for Dz. Ultimately McGriff might end up sliding over from PF and filling most of the minutes here despite being built more like a PF. He can certainly shoot well enough to play SF. HCMB might opt to play a lot of 3 guard sets, with no true SF, if he can land another player at PG. I'm not sure if CuJo can be a real SF, or if Demuth can soak up minutes here. Bottom Line: While it seems that this is a position of need, I think scholarship numbers might preclude MB from adding another player here. With the Boone twins on board after the upcoming season, it only makes sense to use another scholarship here if you can land a kid who will be an immediate difference maker. (more on this in the next paragraph)
PF
I think we all think of McGriff as a Joey Graham-like player and as our starting PF for the next 2 seasons. Sounds great. But, I am not sure it makes the most sense based on this roster. If Cam plays most of the PF minutes, that leaves LNG, K Jones, Demuth and Anei all sharing the minutes at Center (and adding Walker would make the minutes for those guys even fewer). Bottom Line: to me, it makes the most sense to play Cam at SF and let the above 4 guys absorb most of the minutes at PF/C (with Walker hopefully fitting into the picture).
C
I'm going to combine this position with PF because I really don't know which guys are best suited for which of the 2 positions, or which guys are ready for immediate minutes or need more time to develop. I think K Jones will end up being the Center of the future, and I am hopeful that he can lose some weight and make the future now. I don't know if LNG will improve enough to become a regular member of the rotation. It wouldn't surprise me if he looks significantly improved next season and is a good player as a senior (like we saw with MS). But, it also wouldn't surprise me if he looks about the same next season. I think gaining strength and putting on some weight will help a lot if he is able to do so. I have no idea if Demuth or Anei will be able to help immediately, will be better suited to RS, or will never be ready to play at a Big 12 level. I won't be surprised by any of those outcomes with either of them. Clearly, adding Wyatt Walker would significantly impact the PF/C position as he would lock down 1 of the positions and likely soak up 30+ mpg.
Conclusion:
Adding Walker would be a huge move for optimism for this upcoming season. It would not only solidify our prospects in the post, but it would allow the other big men to find their way gradually without being thrown into the fire. In addition, it would make it more conducive for MB to play Cam mostly at the SF position (which might have to happen anyway). After Walker, the most important use of a scholarship would be to add a true PG (preferably a freshman).
That still leaves one scholarship available (I think). IMO, it makes a lot of sense to hold that one for the class of 2019, but if you have a chance to add a kid who can immediately slot into a spot as one of your top 8-9 players, you take him and figure out your scholarship crunch issues after the upcoming season. As things stand now, I expect one, or more, of Dz, LNG, Demuth, and/or Anei to not return after the upcoming season.
