There were definitely more plays that could have changed the game (Rennie's missed block on the jet sweep), but these four in particular stood out to me. I'm sure these have already been mentioned, but my post has pictures ![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Play 1- After a first down, we go super hurry up and catch the defense off guard and out of position. We throw the quick bubble to Washington at the bottom of the formation. The CB and safety are MIA. With blocking out in front and the defense totally out of position, this play is probably a TD if not for the false start. (watch Glidden after the whistle jumping up and down because he knows this) Instead we start off the new set of downs behind the chains and don't recover.
Play 2- The dreaded bubble screen on 3rd and 1 (ESPN didn't update the down and distance in the graphic above). I paused this shot right as Jarwin (at the top of the screen) released his man and turned and looked for the ball that was thrown to Ateman. Either Jarwin was supposed to keep his block, or Rudolph threw to the wrong man. Either way, miscommunication caused what should have been an easy conversion (or a long gain for Jarwin) into a punting situation.
Play 3- I am posting this picture hoping for some insight from a certain poster here. I think his name is Cincy? CMU is playing run the whole way and showing man coverage in the back. It seems to me this should have been an easy check for Rudolph with Washington getting single coverage at the bottom of the formation??? I don't remember Rudolph making any line checks the whole game, but I could be wrong. Does he have that privilege? Instead we run it with a zone read look, with the H back releasing and we get blown up in the backfield. Results in a field goal. Really a win for the CMU defense after a drop dead turnover.
Play 4-At this point the game is pretty much over. However a TD here ends the game on a positive note and a 31-13 score. If Walsh keeps it here, he goes in for a score. Not sure if it was a straight handoff playcall or a read.
