Would they normally be involved in intubating patients? Like PD, this was the first time I've actually heard that term.
Based on my experience, the impression I get of a “hospitalist” is an MD on staff who serves as a trouble shooter. Had a relative with dementia who was in the hospital to have a pin put in to repair a broken femur. He kept trying to get out of bed so they put him in restraints. Then he kept getting halfway out of bed and was kind of “dangling” off the side of the bed. Finally, the attending physician called in a hospitalist who ordered a 24/7 sitter in the hospital room. I must say, I was quite baffled as to why the orthopedist couldn’t request a sitter.
In many areas, particularly in hospitals without intensivists, yes they likely would.
Hospitalists do general medical management. An orthopedist is a carpenter for humans. Trust me, you do not want your orthopedist to take care of your medical problems. In any patient with concomitant medical problems, the hospitalist admits and manages those while specialists are consulted for specific things such as hip fractures.
