Things I Never Got Into

Don't take it personal. Some of these things are probably near and dear to your heart, a foundational part of your personality. Off the top of my head:

Video Games
We had some kind of down-scale pong when I was very young, that we played on our console tube Curtis Mathes TV. But I was never privileged enough to progress to an Atari, etc. I got my ass kicked any time I hung out with my video game playing friends, so I never got into it.

Comic Books and Super-Hero Movies
I see, maybe on average, 1.5 super hero movies per year. Mostly during the summer, mid-week matinee. They're OK. Whatever.

Quoting Rap Lyrics at Length
I really like hip-hop history. There's always that one dude who starts ripping multiple lines from classic albums. Not that dude.

Pool
I can fake it for a couple of shots, but that's it.

Card Games, Including Poker
My grandma knew every card game ever conceived. Too bored/ADD to pick it up. Never got into the poker thing.

Gambling, Minus Long Stretches using a Bookie
I go to Vegas, I just want to people watch and drink. I enjoyed betting on NCAA and NFL football back in the day, back before the Internet when you had a phone number to call.

Golf
I've played a few times. I think I could get into it someday, if I had disposable time and money.

Hanging Out at the Lake
Sitting in the sun at Kaw Lake or Keystone drinking cheap beer just never did it for me, even back when I enjoyed cheap beer. I do like to fish, however.

Harry Potter/LOTR
I've read a few passages of both, and seen several of the movies, both in part and full. Meh. Probably because I didn't read this kinda stuff growing up. I read historical choose-your-own-adventures, National Geographic, and the 1975 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica my dad had in his study. Nerd alert.

Smoking (Cigarettes)
I tried it for a few weeks in my 20s. Didn't take. I like cigars, and would smoke green weekly if it were legal (just not worth the trouble at this point in my life).

Skateboarding
Growing up in the 80s, I wanted a skateboard SO BAD. All my "city" (Enid) friends had one. But what the hell was I going to do with one on the farm? Ride it on the 10x10 concrete slab in our barn?

Boy Scouts
Had ample opportunity to run around in the woods, thanks.

Never saw a minute of the Sopranos. Just watched The Drop. That Gandolfini guy is pretty good. Oh well.

My list would be identical to yours and for the same reasons, except for golf and LOTR.

Frisbee. Like Alex Cate, I can really sling it -- just not where anyone can catch it.

Skiing.
No water or snow in West Texas.

Comic books and super heros. And lazy hyper-CGI movie reboots of same.

Rap / hip hop. not a cultural thing so much as the fact that I despise pop culture music where the music is sampled, pre recorded etc and the "artists" don't play a note or you know... Sing.

Rivals Mainboard. I have wasted enough time here over the years. No time for anything more. Plus that place is scary.

Golf - I actually love rolling around in a golf cart drinking beer and hitting the ball but I can't take it seriously or invest in it. To me, frisbee golf is way more fun honestly.

OKC Thunder. I'm trying. Just don't care about the NBA. I was really into the Dream Team era NBA of the late 80's to mid 90's. But it's just one thing too many to give a shit about now.

Fishing. I can think of many less chigger bitten ways to drink beer and hang out.

Harry Potter - though I just feel sorry for anyone who didn't get into the LOTR. That's like comparing Cheetos to Thnaksgiving dinner.

For me?

Hunting. I've never gone bird hunting and the last time I killed a deer was over ten years ago. I don't like the taste of deer meat these days, my boys don't like to hunt, and I'm not really interested in all the time and effort. Easier and cheaper to buy meat at the store.

Water skiing. Never got into it. Love snow skiing, however.

Horror movies. They don't scare me and half the time are gross. Not worth my time.

Reality TV shows. Never watched a single episode.

Country music and rap. No interest in either genre. Used to work construction in the summers and wanted to tear my eardrums out when the older dudes wanted to play country.

Things many of my friends were into that I never did:

Smoking (weed and cigs)
Hunting (tried once with my gpa and fell asleep in the stand)
Super heroes and their movies (outside of batman, they're all yawners to me)
AMD cores (always ran way too hot for my taste"nerd rant" )

Golf-My dad loved it and tried to force it on my when I was young. It never took and now I have no interest.

Hunting-I was a city kid, so not exposed to it until I got to OSU and lived with guys who were into it. Went bird hunting once. It rained all day and we never saw a bird. I was soaked and cold when we got home. Never had interest in trying again.

Roller Coasters and similar rides- I am too much of a control freak. I don't see the thrill that others seem to get from this type of ride. I can ride them, but I don't enjoy them.

Horror Movies- Like AC, I just don't get the appeal. Not scary. Not enjoyable. I do like a good suspense movie though (like the first Saw movie or Sixth Sense). I don't mind some horror type aspects to a movie if it is clever and makes me think.

FPS video games- They can be fun for about an hour. After that, they become monotonous and I lose interest.

Comic books and super heroes (although have enjoyed Superman and Batman movies over the years)

Hunting and fishing (never hunted, but have enjoyed shooting clays; both just take too much time)

Golf (played for several years and enjoyed drinking beer with it, but just way too much time commitment)

NBA (never enjoyed it much; watched some Larry Bird and Michael Jordan around the NBA finals times)

Rap/Hip-Hop, Folk or Country music (just rock, grunge, metal type stuff for me)

Harry Potter; LOTR (I did enjoy the LOTR movies, but didn't read any of those books)

Reality TV shows (got sucked into the first couple of Survivors seasons, but nothing since then)

Apple products (what a pain; I just want to drag and drop files between an iPad and a computer just like any other device; but no, you have to install a bunch of resource hogging apple programs and third party programs to do something so simple; while I would never buy an apple product, I guess I can't control what my kids buy with their money)

Anodyne,

I'm close to you on most of your list. However, I did have an Atari and was somewhat into video up until I was about 12 or 13. The last game I really cared about was the original Super Mario Brothers; that was probably around 1985 or so. I've never ever played an X-Box or PSP or Madden or anything like that.

I've never read a comic book in my life, but there are some movie franchises I really like...the Chris Nolan Batmans...the first two Spiderman movies with Toby Maguire...most of the X-Men movies...I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was really good...otherwise not so much...I'm pretty much take them or leave them.

The biggest difference I have with your list is Harry Potter. A little embarrassing for a grown man to admit it, but I really got into them. I was a 10th grade HS teacher for 8 years. This was at peak HP time. It was crazy...kids who I questioned even if they could read were carrying around these books. Finally, about the time book 3 came I out, I gave in and had to see what it was all about. And damn it, if I didn't sucked in. At this point, I've read them all, seen all the movies, sleep in Harry Potter PJs (ok, I don't do that), but there's not a HP book or movie I didn't enjoy. My son is six, and I can't wait until he's old enough where I can start reading the books to him.

Otherwise, I'm almost completely in line with you. I hate golf, don't gamble, never got into skateboarding (wasn't anti-social enough), boy scouts...uuhhh NO, hate lakes...

Beyond that, there are a bunch of Manly things I just do not enjoy, probably most here would revoke my man-card... beer, grilling, pets, hunting, guns, building things, fixin' things (basically anything Tim Allen thinks is entertaining, I probably hate). If it were not for sports, I'd probably be a woman.

Cars....muscle or otherwise: don't care how fast it goes or what kind of engine it has. If it gets me there, I'm good.

Hunting: I never understood the appeal. Stand out in the cold, shoot something, drag it back home. Meh...couldn't care less.

Lake/beach: other than people watching, it has no appeal to me.

Fishing: unless it's deep sea, I don't need an excuse to drink beer. I'll just drink beer.

I was into video games pretty big time as a kid and even as a young adult. I even used to play some 4-5 years ago, but now can't get interested.

Golf: I was a little in HS and college, not much thereafter. Now: none.

Things that I was never into (that were popular):

  • Any reality TV contest show
  • Game of Thrones
  • Lord of the RIngs movies (I've read 2 of the books and The Hobbit)
  • The band Journey
  • Hunting
  • Rap/Hip-hop
  • Cigarettes
  • Fruity mixed drinks (maybe a daquiri once in a blue moon and Old fashioned's don't really count if made correctly)
  • Casino gambling
  • Water skiing (and, really, hanging at the lake period)
  • Sushi
  • Motorcycles
  • Dance clubs

Comics, cocaine, khakis, liquor, movies, fiction books, the Beatles, cigars, cars, hockey, people's feelings

Renaissance fairs--seriously...why?

+1 on main board--I've had a gut full of chat board morons in other avenues...

Reality shows--I've hated those ever since MTV started with all that crap back in the 90s. Music TV....does anyone make music videos anymore that are with a damn?

Major League Baseball. I watch exactly one game per year; the 7th game of the world series. Most games are a huge waste of time. Plus, the season is just fatiguing.

NHL hockey - I watch it even less than I watch baseball.

Watching Golf - see above.

Riding road bikes 100 miles - I know plenty of guys that do this. Waste of time.

Tequila - only gives me the shhts the next day. No thanks.

Gambling - I'll go to my buddie's for a poker game and lose 20 bucks, but it's more about hanging out with friends. Never played a single card game at a casino.

Paintball - running around like a video game commando in 95 degree weather? Nope.

Rock climbing - I'll go hiking up a mountain trail but no interest in hanging from ropes on a steep ledge.

Strip clubs - watching some 19-year-old trailer park queen trying to make a buck just doesn't do it for me these days. It just makes me sad.

Frisbee Golf - it's for hippie stoners.

Comic Books - Literally never bought a single one, even as a kid. (Although I do like the marvel Cinematic Universe)

Harry Potter, LOTR, Lost, Game of Thrones, Dr. Who, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, HIMYM, and pretty much any other TV show. - Think I'll stick to reruns of M*A*S*H

eh, I'm sure I'll think of more.

So, most of your list…I pretty much agree with, but this line above makes me sad for you (even though I don't know what HIMYM is). I can see a person not liking one or even two of those shows, but all of them???? Wow, that is some grumpy, old man sh** right there.

MASH is a great show, btw.

Cars - They go from point A to point B relatively fast. I own two of them. I keep them clean and well maintained. I have zero interest in owning a "cool" car though, and even less ever owning one I still owe money on.

Self Help Books - That's really enough said I think... Although any book worth it's weight is a "self help book."

Golf - And I really like sports...

I never got into:

- Any music past 1985. Couldn't name a top 100 song at gunpoint.
- HBO or Showtime shows. Don't get either channel and don't want to.
- WNBA. Self explanatory.
- Harry Potter? Have no idea what this is about.
- MLB. Loved it as a kid but refuse to watch because of steroids.

HIMYM = "How I Met Yoir Mother". Never got into it. And this thread isn't about things I don't like - it's things I never got into. So basically I never got into a few uber-popular TV shows and movies. But I'll watch historical documentaries or anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe all day.

Poketologist: "Strip clubs - watching some 19-year-old trailer park queen trying to make a buck just doesn't do it for me these days. It just makes me sad."

That made me think of this classic tune from Bloodhound Gang (NSFW)

CrossFit - can't believe no one has mentioned this yet.
I would be into Crossfit, but damn, those monthly fees aren't cheap.

As for me, I've never got into:

Modern Country Music - I think it's just awful crap music.

Firearms - I don't bemoan anyone for owning guns, but I, myself, have never been much into them. I didn't grow up around them and didn't really know anyone much into shooting or hunting even until I got to OSU. Doesn't help that I've been robbed at gunpoint while working as a teller during law school.

Cross Canadian Ragweed - Being at OSU in the late 90's, they were the it band. Can't stand them. I'm ashamed to admit I've paid money to see them play due to peer pressure.

Dr. Who - I never even heard of this show until a few years ago. Now I'm an old recluse behind the times.

Water sports/going to the lake/floating the river
- My inner grumpy old man comes out on this topic. Sounds like a lot of work to load up, drive a few hours to whatever body of water only to come back sunburnt, hungover, and worn out. I've never had much fun at the lake, especially. My last trip was 4-5 years ago to Grand Lake for a cousin's bachelor party. We went to Dripping Springs where apparently, it's the thing to do to sit in the water with your floatation device and drink. I never saw anyone get out of the water to go to the bathroom. So you just sit, in the water, full of the entire state's urine, drinking. Waste. Of. Time.

Hunting - To quote Ron White "it's really early in the morning, it's really cold outside, and... I don't wanna go." Nuff said.

Jurassic Park franchise - I've only seen snippets of the first movie and none of the subsequent ones. The premise has no appeal to me whatsoever.

Bar/Tavern/Pub games - Not just pool, but darts or even Golden Tee. I've never understood their appeal. Also doesn't help that I'm dreadful at all of them.

Golf - As in watching on TV. Absolutely boring game to watch. Couldn't tell you the names of any of the major events or who the current top golfers are. Semi-fun to play. Driving range can be semi-fun as well. Only drawback to not being into golf is that this seems to be the only activity my other fellow married friends are into.

NASCAR or any motor "sport" - It's not a sport. There is zero athletic ability in turning left or crashing a car. I've done both.

Thank you for this -- I was waiting to see if anybody tackled it.

I recommend Metamodern Sounds in Country Music by Sturgill Simpson. It's the best C&W album I've heard since..... forever. It's the best album I've heard in forever, too. Straight old school country and talent.

Drinking/Getting Drunk - Never did it. I don't like the taste of beer or wine. Shots of alcohol are fine, but never have sat at a bar and run up a tab. I was always the one that knew what truely happened on Friday nights in High School/College. If only they had cell phones back then, I would have so much leverage on everyone I know.

Smoking cigs/weed - See drinking.

Drugs - See above.

I may be the only person on here that has never been drunk or high and don't care to try it now. Just don't see the point.

Baseball - boring. I'll watch just about most other sports (NASCAR is not a sport but I don't watch it either).

Hunting/Fishing - I don't have the patience.

Golf - I'm a strange one in that I enjoy watching/following it and appreciate the skill. Just no desire/time to play it.

Social Media - unless this site counts, I don't do any of it

Cars - like mentioned by others, as long as it gets me there in a relatively comfortable/safe manner....I'm good

Deer hunting - I do love to bird/duck hunt

Sci-fi/Fantasy/Comics - I have enjoyed some of the superhero movies, but have only seen a few

Horror Flick - don't like gore/death/etc

MTV

Video Games

Using the term shade. For some reason this drives me nuts.

Kids- I really don't care if I have kids or not. Kids are alright and if I have one I will love the hell out of him/her but my life happiness isn't based on me having kids.

Lots of good ones on the list. For me the top ones would be

Smoking / heavy drinking. Never saw the point

Video games. - Born too early. If I was a generation younger I'm sure I would have wasted my youth on Madden etc.

Rap / disco / heavy metal - pretty much a classic rock guy

Any thing involving vampires or zombies.

Comic books, super hero's and anything based on them.

hunting / guns. Grew up fishing though. Always loved an evening on the water listening to a little baseball just relaxing. Haven't been since my Dad died.

Talk radio or 24 hour news. I prefer a little more fact and a little less opinion.

Hacky Sack. Never understood it.

Drugs or getting high. Tried pot once in Jr. High. Realized it was fun but not worth getting in trouble over.

Cigs. Could never see the appeal of smoking.

Comic Books. I had very few when I was a kid.

Agreed on the comic books and hacky sack. However, on the drugs and cigs, sir, you have missed out.

This is an interesting thread...

Man, I think for me it's more I have never had the time to "get" into anything. From day one I worked. My dad was fireman, and when he was home, we worked. And when he was not, I had a list.

If it wasn't for my mother, I would have never been able to play sports. I respect my father and I learned a shit load, so not complaining. My father is great man.

Up until about 5 years ago, that is how I lived my life. I worked my ass off. Was in public accounting and lived in the office. Then a Corporate Controller for a large company going through an IPO, and lived in the office.

Anyway, for me, I am at a point in my life where I want try everything.

Rap, bring it on. Houston local rap scene is legit.

Arts- all about it.

Weight training - lovin that stuff right now.

Frisbee golf, I've tried it and want more.

Really want to try my hand on the geetar...
