Oklahoma will be fielding a strong team coming off the win at Junior duals in Oklahoma City. Flo wrestling is airing the tournament starting on July 19th with the senior women freestyle. I have reinstated my subscription on a month by month basis so I can view a lot of this tournament.
If you will allow a digression by an aging wrestling fan, I offer the following true story concerning a past Junior Nationals.
In 1986 "Micco" was a senior in high school and was on the Oklahoma freestyle team going to Junior Nationals in Iowa.
The rest of the family was on a family vacation visiting relatives in Indianapolis. We decided that upon leaving the relatives that we would go and watch Micco and the wrestling in Iowa.
We checked into our Motel and I went to see where the wrestling was to begin that evening. I should also indicate that the trip to Iowa was marred by a breakdown on the Highway where we had to be towed to a car dealership and lost the whole afternoon sitting in the dealership where the car was being repaired. We knew that the event started early that day so we expected to miss Micco's first match.
No one at the Motel could tell me about a wrestling tournament being held which should have been my first clue. This was long before the days of cell phones so I could not call Micco. It took about an hour before I was able to ascertain that the wrestling was at the Uni-dome in Cedar Falls. The problem was we were checked into a Motel in CEDAR RAPIDS.
Long story short-we missed Micco's First two matches that day and he won both of them. We drove on to Cedar Falls early the next morning and we were able to view Micco's 3rd and 4th matches, both of which he lost. Micco thinks we jinxed him and tells everyone if we had not shown up that he would have been the 1984 141 pound champion in Fargo.
The 240 pound Micco had surgery yesterday and HIPPA rules will not allow me to comment further except to say it was the same surgery "Z" had twice. He is recovering nicely and in a few weeks or months he will be able to pick up a hose again and protect Tulsa citizens from fire.
