Thought you guys might like to see some pics from guiding and hunting this fall.

It's a series of pictures from September archery through last week when we guided my dad and a few others for elk and deer. We have December antelope and cow elk still to come with trips to Arkansas, Nebraska, and Alabama left.

X2, Great images and wonderful outdoors you have there! (Plus that looks to be a very nice bull elk about 5 shots down...)
I hit Colorado every year, but haven't hunted in a long time. I typically go for the fishing and have trouble getting off in the fall (I'm in academia but retiring for the first time next month). I hope next fall to get up there and hunt while I still have some legs.

excellent pics, a few are frame worthy in my book...

would like to find out more about your guided trips....

Here's the deal with how we guide, it's kind of different so I'll give the long version.

I'm the CEO/Pres of a corporation that has multiple subsidiaries in trucking/logistics, ranching, farming, and a guest ranch. I operate portions of these under a forest service permit that dictates what I can do commercially. I'm also a guide and outfitter under the COA in state and most of what we do is partner with a group of guides not far from us who contract under our permits.

We guide our own hunters, but since it's not in my operating permit, I can't charge money. I can legally since I have a guide/outfitter license in state, but hunting is not part of my operation, therefore I don't charge.

This works great so I invite folks who've not hunted much (if ever) or we take kids out or we take dad's with their sons for a horseback deer or elk hunt. And I don't charge them so they can focus on the experience and not be obsessed with success.

Basically, I take out about 4 or 5 people a year and give them an experience. It's fun for me and my guys to do, especially since we can structure it around our hunting season.

I also take my 70 year old dad out since he only has a few left in him. Every year gets harder, but this year when I shot my bull with my bow, dad was there and it was really fun calling him in.

Anyway, that's the deal. Most of what we shoot are very average bucks, small bulls or spikes, cows and that's about it. The experience trumps the trophy.

Peter and I kill some decent stuff, but we go places that I won't take most folks since the country gets so brutal and 4 hours a night sleep is pretty tough.

One quick story on that 2 year old cow elk. She was in with about 50 elk coming off a steep ridge. The guy in the picture had a cow tag so when we slipped up on those elk we had a chance to be picky. He is from Arkansas and had never even seen elk in the wild other than driving up to Summit County to ski.

We were about 100 yards out laying flat in the open. I saw two older cows and this young one walk out. I tapped him to shoot the young cow. He did and she rolled down the mountain. The rest of the elk just stopped and watched her, then proceeded to mill around and bed down for about 45 minutes! During that time we watched 4 bulls take turns sparring, it was crazy.

His first question when they finally walked off was why we killed the young cow. I told him to always shoot the calves or two year old's with a cow tag because a 12 year old herd cow will make you swear off elk meat for life.

His second question was how often do elk just stand there when shot at. I told him it was probably the first time in recorded history. They typically don't tolerate putting bullets into the middle of a herd.

In 2015, you have a stop to make in Oklahoma. In the words of Greg Swaim, BOOK IT!

I'll do it Jeff. Just getting some time in the woods back home would be nice.

I I had tickets to the Texas game this fall, but I couldn't pull it off with work. What a freaking blessing.

Thanks for details dts... respect what your doing... pretty cool bruh

DTS, do you/could you possibly do a drop camp (or guide) for primitive archers? (again with the long bow!)

Just curious what might be possible. I'd love to have my grandsons come up but hard to do with school and my son is a coach as well (coached redshirt cowboy Cole Waltershied from Muenster). Maybe some day.

Thanks for sharing the story and the experience. Is that you with the bow / elk?

Regardless, I want to stop by sometime and buy you a beer and shake your hand when I'm up that way.

Yep, we could do something if the timing lined up with some other things we have going on in September. I'd put you guys in the Lost Creek Wilderness and we could work out the supply arrangement. It's not a big deal, just a matter of our schedules since we gather, process, and ship cattle during that time, and I also teach horsemanship clinics with a good friend of mine.

Yeah, I'm in a few of those pictures. Shot that little bull in September with my dad. Called him out of a larger bunch that was over the ridge out of sight. Brought him in for my dad to shoot, but dad had a bad angle and couldn't get a shot. He stepped out right around 50 yards and was staring right at us, but couldn't figure out what we were. He was moving up wind and it was just a matter of time before he slipped off or winded us, so I went ahead and shot him.

Interestingly enough, it's a common experience for elk to run further after being shot with a rifle than with a bow. Not always of course, but it's not unusual. This guy didn't get 20 yards before he piled up and rolled down the mountain.

Thanks for posting DTS.

I had tags out near the flattops but wasn't able to go for multiple reasons.

I need to plan more thoroughly and decisively for next year. This outing was with our pastor and some others from our church. They managed to nab a couple squirrels. No joke - they didn't see a single elk for a week. 70 degrees most days (3rd season).

My son is 7 and I'm starting to think of when it would be good to get him on his first hunt. My own experience is highly limited - I've been out a few times and never gotten anything, but half of my reason for hunting is being out in the wilderness and the other half is putting meat in my freezer, so from that perspective I'm batting 0.500. :)

Love that country down in your neck of the woods. Would love to put something together with your outfit one of these years.

When your son is closer to being able to do a youth hunt, especially a January cow elk hunt, we should talk. Great success rate, not very hard (just cold), and will fill your freezer. A deer hunt would be great too, I could get him a doe in about 4 minutes.
