Elk in the Oklahoma Panhandle

One of my pledge brothers emailed me photo's of quite a few bull Elk taken at the Freeman Ranch just north of Texhoma. I had no idea there were elk out in western ok.

Well, that brightened my day! I'll gladly take that bull on the far right in the second pic. I remember reading that elk were mostly a plains animal, like bison, until white men drove them to the mountains and heavier cover.

At one point they were in 38 states and had a broader range than modern whitetail
 
There are Elk all over this state if you count transients. I have seen numerous elk NW of Guymon near Hough. There is a great wild herd with great bulls between Putnam and Camargo too.
 
Yeah, Matt Freeman took that photo. We have plenty that migrate into the area during the fall and winter, and with their numbers rising and hunting putting pressure on them in NM, I only expect the numbers in this area to rise.
