I know nothing about knife collecting.

I have a question about a knife I just picked up in trade.

I just traded for a pristine, never carried, never cut Microtech L-UDT dated 1/96

I can't decide if I should keep it pristine or carry this bad boy. Any thoughts on what it is worth or how I should treat it?

I can see other UDT's selling in the $400 - $450 or so range, but I can't find anything dated that far back to compare value.

I don't know anything about collecting .. How much would using it damage the value? Is the knife rare enough to worry about keeping it pristine?

Use it. It's never going to be worth much more than it is now. Good steel and a sharp edge are worth more than the appreciation.

That is what I thought. Just wanted to make sure.
